What are the things you love about working at PCA?
I love the community we have as an Upper School faculty, the relationships with students we are able to form, and the shared mission of maximizing each student’s God-given potential.
What makes you passionate about Christian education?
I love the ability to partner with families who are trying to raise their children in a faith that is currently very counter cultural, in offering their children an excellent faith-based education.

What do you love about working at PCA?
I love watching students grow in confidence as they begin to see themselves the way God sees them—capable, valued, and called. Middle schoolers bring humor, curiosity, and honesty to every day, and I count it a privilege to walk alongside them as they discover their gifts and faith.
I love working with a team of educators who seek both excellence and grace, and who truly see education as discipleship.

Get To Know Mrs. Bowden
Mrs. Bowden is one of our incredible Middle School Science Teachers. She is a proud New Hampshire resident where she lives with her husband, Kyle, and three children, who are all current PCA students. Mrs. Bowden began at PCA, in 2021, helping in 6th grade Science classes one day a week. Her role then grew to her current role as a Middle School Science Teacher. Her love of our natural world and all of God’s creatures fuels her excitement for the subject matter she teaches.
Prior to joining the PCA family, Mrs. Bowden taught 7th grade Science in Stratham as well as through VLACS, an online NH Charter School. While Mrs. Bowden was content teaching online, when her family arrived at PCA she could “sense the enthusiasm and commitment to creating Christ centered graduates and knew that this is where [her] family belonged”. We are thankful she answered the call and excited to have her here at PCA!

What do you love about teaching?
I love the curiosity and enthusiasm of children. It’s a unique privilege to be able to come alongside their families as their children learn – not just academics, but who God is and who He made them to be. The community at PCA is like none other that I’ve experienced. It truly is a joy to come to work every day.

Get To Know Mrs. Brown
Mrs. Ruth Brown has been a dedicated Kindergarten teacher at Portsmouth Christian Academy (PCA) since 1992. Before joining PCA, she taught in public schools and, along with her husband Rob, raised their two sons, Andrew and Timothy.
Originally from Barrington, New Hampshire, Mrs. Brown came to know Jesus as her Savior at a young age after hearing a missionary from China speak at the Barrington Evangelical Free Church. She met her husband at Berkshire Christian College, and together they have served in ministry throughout New England and around the world.
With 33 years of experience in early childhood education, Mrs. Brown is passionate about fostering a strong foundation for lifelong learning. She has mentored new teachers, engaged in action research focused on curriculum development, and contributed to growth action plans in literacy development for young learners.
Deeply committed to missions, Mrs. Brown has traveled to Africa with her family and has participated in short-term mission trips with PCA to Romania, Panama, and Costa Rica. In her free time, she enjoys knitting, walking, and spending time outdoors with her family.
What do you love about teaching?
In Colossians 1:9-14, my calling as a Christian educator is outlined for me. First, God has given me a love to share the Kingdom in developmentally appropriate ways. Secondly, helping children to develop and grow in knowledge and wisdom; by first recognizing their strengths is one way God has gifted me. Defining specific learning styles represented in my classroom challenges me to adapt best teaching practices to all students in my classroom. Thirdly, my classroom environment creates a community of learners who care for each other and recognize the uniqueness of each student. Lastly, I need to constantly learn how to foster student learning, best practices, and continue to create a nurturing environment.
What is your favorite bible verse?
I have two life Bible verses: Isaiah 30:15; “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” and Isaiah 32:17; “The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.”

I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a teacher. After college, I got my first teaching job teaching second grade at PCA the first year they were at the Dover campus. While teaching at PCA, I went to earn my Master’s degree. I later taught in the Early Childhood/Elementary Education program at Clarks Summit University in PA for 19 years and also earned my doctorate in Early Childhood Education during that time. I moved back to New Hampshire in 2024 and returned to PCA to teach fourth grade.
What do you love about teaching?
I love the opportunity and privilege to shape young lives and to watch the growth that occurs in students throughout the course of the year.
What do you love about working at PCA?
I love working at PCA because of the opportunity to integrate my faith into my teaching.
What is one of your favorite moments in teaching?
That’s a tough one to answer after 27 years of teaching. I think each year brings it’s own special moments and memories, but watching the growth that children make throughout the year is always one of my favorite things.
Hearing about former students or running into them is always one of my favorite things and also learning that some have gone on to be teachers themselves. It’s also fun to hear the things they remembered or found significant from their time in my class.

What are the things you love about working at PCA?
Without hesitation, what I love most about working at PCA are the people I work with! My co-laborers in Christ at PCA truly care about one another and the students. We are not here because we have to be here! We are here because we want to be here! “The man who loves his job never works a day in his life.” ~ Confucius
What makes you passionate about Christian education?
Christian education enables us to recognize and openly acknowledge God’s divine design in every aspect of life. Christian education enhances one’s ability to recognize the calling God has placed upon his or her life. Each of us has been created with a divine design and purpose, which is not snuffed out through Christian education; rather, it is fanned into flame!

Once they were older, she worked in the public school system for 10 years as an interventionist and then began at PCA in 2019. Mrs. Coppinger and her husband Kevin, have three children and own their own plumbing and heating business in the area.
What do you love about teaching?
I love helping students with learning differences develop a love of learning. There is nothing quite like seeing a student go from being reading phobic to blossoming into an avid reader. I just love seeing the excitement they get from understanding print and wanting to read, especially read for pleasure. And because I feel so much more of a connection with my students here at PCA, the joy is even greater. I am confident that this is the place God has for me and I am so thankful for each student that I get to work with.

While on active duty, Dr. Gamble attended graduate schooling at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst and taught on the faculty at West Point. He later completed his doctorate in European History. He retired from the US Army in 1996, and began teaching at Portsmouth Christian High School that fall as the first dedicated history teacher in what would later become the Upper School at PCA.
“I love Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I love the study of history (my library is over 4,000 volumes), and I continuously read new books (right now working on Toby Lester’s The Fourth Part of the World: The Race to the Ends of the Earth, and the Epic Story of the Map That Gave America Its Name). I love young people, and I feel called to teach history in a Christian framework as my ministry. My biggest thrill is to have our alumni come back and tell me they were well prepared to succeed at the college of their choice with respect to faith, self-discipline, and academics, especially in their history classes.”

What has been your favorite moment of teaching at PCA?
“My favorite moment so far at PCA has been the discovery of comb jellies off the PCA dock. Cal Burnham (Class of 2022) saw them first while we were out with Botany & Zoology. I took each of my classes to the dock that week to see them, and used my GoPro to film them underwater for the online students. I then worked with the Marine Science class to take the data that shaped our hypothesis: The comb jellies’ appearance so far upstream was probably due to the drought (summer-fall 2020), since there was no fresh water coming down the Bellamy River to dilute the ocean’s salt water.”

Steve has a Bachelor of Arts in History from the State University of New York at Albany; a Military Master’s in Art & Science in Theater Operations (Higher Level Planning) from the Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies. He has enrolled in Liberty University’s Master’s in Education Supervision & Administration program.
Steve and his wife Lee have two children in the New Hampshire Seacoast. They are members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Topsfield Massachusetts.
Why Did You Feel Called To Come To PCA?
I believe it is vitally important that the Church provide academically vibrant and rigorous educational alternatives to a secular school system that is increasingly hostile to people of faith and parental authority. By providing an outstanding academic and unapologetically Christian educational option to Seacoast parents, PCA fills that role.
As a father and educator, I have seen school systems that have not always prioritized their partnership with parents, and I am excited to be part of a community that seeks to support parents in their role as the primary educator of their children.

What is one of your favorite moments from teaching?
Today one student said, “I usually hate writing poems. But I liked writing this poem.”
“Wait, Repeat that!” I said in disbelief.
“I liked writing this poem. I could write about something I wanted,” he replied.
“My job here is done,” I answered with a smile. “That’s what I want to hear!”

LeeAnna and her family love spending time together, usually over good food, and in the winter months they enjoy downhill skiing and exploring the woods with their German Shepherd, Piper. Their beloved cat, Jasper, also keeps life lively at home.
What do you love most about working at PCA?
I love working at PCA and being involved with the community. Everyone is genuine, kind, and helpful. PCA really feels like a big family and has been a tremendous support to our family. I look forward to passing it forward – whether talking to kids in College Planning at the Upper School, or playing with PCAP kids after school during the week.

Pierre-Luc began his career as an officer in the Canadian Army, a period during which he became a Christian and embarked on his faith journey. As his career advanced, so too did his spiritual growth, allowing him to integrate his understanding of education, government and non-governmental organizations, international relations, and Christian ministry into a life of service to the Kingdom of God.
With both he and his wife serving in the military, settling down took time, and together they traveled the world, gaining rich life experiences along the way. From the tropical climates of the Pacific Islands to the deserts of the Middle East, Pierre-Luc held a variety of roles, including administrative and teaching positions spanning preschool to university. During this time, he learned multiple languages, including French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, which he employed in missionary work. Known as Pierre to English speakers, Pierre-Luc to French speakers, and Abdullah to Arabic speakers, he embraced opportunities to share the Gospel across cultures and continents.
Pierre-Luc rejoices in the opportunity to teach at PCA, where he can draw on his background in education and divinity to serve students. His prayer is to make a meaningful impact on the students, staff, and families of PCA, both academically and spiritually.
Why do you love working at PCA?
I love working in a Christian school, since we can build on the foundation of Christ and truly get to the heart of why education matters. The ultimate truth is found in Christ, who holds the world together and gave his life to save those who would believe in Him.
Favorite Scripture:
John 12:35-36: “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light”.

M.A. History, Pennsylvania State University
M.A. Strategic Leadership, U.S. Army War College

28 Years Serving and Leading in the U.S. Army
Raised in an Army family, Mike Runey attended the United States Military Academy (West Point) graduating as a lieutenant in 1991. Shortly thereafter he married Lieutenant Christiana (Christy) Cassidy. After nearly a year apart, they were assigned to Korea.
Since then, he has served in numerous leadership and staff positions across the globe, such as leading a platoon fighting forest fires in Montana, commanding a rocket unit in Germany, and teaching military history at his alma mater, West Point.
He has deployed five times, including to Bosnia with the 1st Infantry Division (“Big Red One”) in the mid-1990s and to Iraq twice with the 4th Infantry
Division (“Ivy Division), based out of Fort Hood, Texas between 2005 and 2009. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Major Runey worked with the Marines in Western Iraq as a battalion operations officer. His unit delivered new, high-tech precision missiles in support of Marines and Soldiers fighting in the provincial capital, Ramadi. During his second tour in Iraq, he led the 4th Infantry Division’s planning team in Baghdad during a particularly violent period (the “Awakening and Shia uprising”) and into the transition to Iraqi civil control that included a key round of elections. Following Iraq, Lieutenant Colonel Runey led an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps
(ROTC) battalion of over 300 cadets at Penn State, raising the next generation of Army leaders. He then commanded the Army garrison in Schweinfurt, Germany, a community of 12,000 soldiers and families supporting NATO. In two years there, his team deployed and redeployed all of those soldiers in support of operations in Afghanistan, while caring for their families who remained in Germany.
Colonel Runey then served with US Army Recruiting spearheading the commanding general’s initiatives to sustain the All-Volunteer Force as well as leading mobile technology initiatives for the Army in support of the recruiters nationwide. Following graduation from the U.S Army War College, he deployed again to lead a team of U.S. and allied officers in NATO Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan. There they coordinated the efforts of hundreds of NATO advisors to assist the Afghan police and army in securing their population and defeating the Taliban.
In the summer of 2016, he returned home, moved the family to Virginia, and assumed leadership of the Joint and Army Concept Development division in the Army’s Future and Concepts Center. His job there was to envision the future (2030 and beyond) and create ways the Army will operate, fight, and win against increasingly capable adversaries in a rapidly changing world.
Mike’s education includes a B.S. from the United States Military Academy (1991), a M.A. from the Pennsylvania State University (History, 2001), and a M.A. from the Army War College (Strategic Studies, 2015).
His historical research and writing focuses on the World War II and Cold War eras, with special emphasis on how citizen soldiers raised, replaced, and sustained leadership in combat. He has also written and published on Division level operations in a brigade-centric Army as well as sustaining America’s All-Volunteer Force amidst 21st Century challenges.
All of those experiences, combined with a love for God and for raising the next generation, led him to and prepared him for PCA.
Mike joined PCA as Head of School in 2019. He and his wife, Christy, are blessed with four children—Sarah, Rebekah, Peter, and Caleb—and currently live in Dover, NH and call Durham Evangelical their home church.
What do you love about working at PCA?
I love seeing God at work in the lives of our students individually and together, and how our teachers, coaches, and mentors guide and challenge them into real growth and remarkable levels of increased mastery across every area of life. I get to see this every day across all 15 grade levels of our school. My aim is to prepare, protect, and provide for our school in such as way as this continues for generations to come, leading the school to be faithful to God and our calling.
Favorite Scripture:

What is one of your favorite memories from teaching at PCA?
“A favorite moment that truly encompasses why I “get to” serve in Kindergarten is when a graduating senior came to visit and say, “so long”. While he was visiting, he was asked what his favorite years at PCA were. His reply was 2nd Grade and Kindergarten, continuing on to say “I don’t remember a whole lot about what we did in kindergarten, but I remember how I felt.” Being able to help create that environment for students is very special and something I am honored to do each day.”

Why do you love working at PCA?
Because of the people I see God at work in every day. It’s an honor to have a front-row seat to the lives of students during their school day. It’s a joy to get to know parents, grandparents, and volunteers. I couldn’t do my job without the co-workers who labor beside me each day.
What are your favorite moments at PCA?
Two of my favorite times at PCA are in worship and prayer. I love when the staff and faculty get to sing in worship together. It is never lost on me that I get to do that as part of my job, which has not been a part of my work life previously. Secondly, is the Altar Prayer Club, which is a group of students that meet bi-weekly to learn and practice different aspects of prayer. Experiencing Jesus together with these students has deepened my own faith and is a privilege to watch theirs deepen as well.

“The thing I love most about teaching at PCA are the relationships I have formed with families. I have taught here long enough that many of my former students are starting careers and/or families of their own. I love getting to be a part of the growth of these students, getting to see them go from small children, to confident high schoolers, and all of the stages in between. As an 8th grade teacher, one of my favorite parts of the school year is our annual DC trip. It is so rewarding to enjoy the fruits of our labor as we watch these young men and women show responsibility for their behavior and respect to current and fallen soldiers at the National Cemetery in Arlington. Students that come through my classroom eventually become friends as they graduate and begin their lives. Many stay in touch through social media, and I rejoice with them in all of their accomplishments. I look forward to the day that I have a child of a former student in my classroom.”

What do you love about working at PCA?
I love that we provide a safe place for students (and faculty) to learn and grow spiritually, emotionally and academically. There is a lot of support for each other and a general positivity that helps make for a wonderful environment.
What makes you passionate about Christian education?
I enjoy being able to meet students where they are at and express true connection with them by demonstrating God’s love for them tangibly. I love that we focus on character and spiritual formation and care about the whole child and person. We are able to help address areas of growth and point them towards God’s leading and path when they are struggling.

Tell me a little about yourself?
I have taught in Christian schools in Virginia, Colorado, Maine and New Hampshire. I am a second-generation Christian school educator, and I love being at a school where I am free to talk about Jesus, provide a biblical worldview and encourage students in their own faith journeys. I am most passionate about teaching the Word of God and helping students develop Biblical literacy and a love for Scripture! Favorite teaching moments include any time I manage to evoke small peals of laughter and deep discussions that bring students’ insights, struggles and new revelations to light.

Get To Know Mrs. Wilson
I live in Dover, New Hampshire, where I enjoy spending time with my family. I’m a wife and the mother of two adult children. In my free time, I love reading, sewing, and crocheting. I serve on the Global Outreach (Missions) Team at my church and am also part of the ministry team for Sweet Selah Ministries.
Why do you love working at PCA?
My family and I have been part of the PCA community since 2001. My first role was simply as a mom, and I soon added “volunteer” to that title. When my son was ready to attend PCAP, I applied for a position as an aide, which opened the door to many new opportunities. After a year, I transitioned into the Lower School office to assist the principal, and later divided my time between office work and teaching computer classes. Since 2021, my role has focused on technology support for teachers, parents, and students, primarily with Veracross and NWEA testing. I love being able to help so that teachers can continue to teach and students can continue to learn. It is truly a joy to serve and work at PCA.

Why do you love teaching at PCA?
I love getting to connect the dots between the good gifts we see in this world to Christ being the giver and allowing my students to see the gifts they have been given through music. I am passionate about giving students a foundation of musical experience at a young age that grows each year.
