PCA Upper School Track Team Breaks Records
PCA congratulates the outstanding accomplishments of the Upper School Boys and Girls Track Teams this season.
PCA girls’ track team had their highest placing in school history, placing 4th of 36 schools in Spring Track. They were led by Liza Corso who won both the 1600 meter (5:18.35) and 800 (2:18.30) meter runs and Liza placed 3rd in the 3200 meter. Brianna Malone won the 400m (59.23) run and was 2nd in the 800 meter (2:24.67). Brianna’s time in the 400 meter established a new school record. Photos courtesy of Ben Conant of benconentphoto.com
Over the course of the season, the girls broke four school records: Liza Corso (2 – 800m & 1600m), Brianna Malone (1 – 400m), Ella Malone (1 – Triple Jump). Two athletes qualified for the Meet of Champions: Liza Corso (800m,1600m & 3200m) and Brianna Malone in the 400 and 800m. During this season, PCA girls distance runners were also ranked first in Division 3 in every event from the 400 meter to the 3200 meter as well as both the 4 x 400m and 4 x 800m relays.
However, this did not come without challenge. At the Division 3 Championships, the team was faced with deciding which events to focus on. Athletes were permitted to compete in only four events, including relays, and Liza and Brianna had qualified in several events. Liza completed a very difficult “triple” by competing in the 1600m, 800m, and 3200m with very short rest between events.
PCA Boys’ track team, did not go without their own accomplishments. Over the course of the season, broke four school records. This was achieved by Cameron Peirce (2 – Shot Put & Discus), Tim Kelm (1 – 100m), George Cheney (1 – 400m).
By virtue of his first place in the 100m, Tim Kelm qualified for the Meet of Champions being held Saturday 6/5 at Sanborn Regional High School.
This season, PCA’s track team was coached by Mike Shevenell, head coach; Cheryl Kjendal, distance coach; Ed Sicard multi-event coach; and Steve Cooper, throwing coach.
