Mondays with Mike: What Does Learning Feel Like at PCA?

PCA Families and Students,

We spend a great deal of time as adults thinking and talking about how our students are learning and growing.

This week, I do less talking and a lot more listening.

I sat down with two of our Middle School students, Colin and Olivia, and asked them what learning actually feels like from where they sit:

  • what challenges them,
  • what they do when something doesn’t make sense,
  • where they recognize growth in themselves,
  • and how teachers, classmates, and their faith are shaping these formative years.

What I appreciated most was their joyful candor.

They talked about subjects that have genuinely challenged them, learning to ask teachers for help, recognizing how much they have grown over time, taking greater responsibility for their own learning, finding community, and beginning to own their faith in deeper ways.

They even offered a few ideas about what could make Middle School better.

One of the things their conversation reminded me is that growth rarely happens in one dramatic moment. It happens over time—in classrooms, conversations, friendships, challenges, encouragement, and many ordinary moments that the Lord uses in the lives of our students.

Our students are not finished products. They are young people in the middle of what God is doing in their lives.

I’m grateful to Colin and Olivia for letting us listen in, and for the teachers, families, and classmates who are walking alongside them.

God bless you, and we’ll see you on campus soon.
