Mondays with Mike: Shepherding Safety at PCA

Good Monday Afternoon, PCA Community!

We are heading into mid-quarter this week, the year is gaining momentum. By now, your children are well-established in their rhythms across academics, arts, athletics, and friendships. I am deeply grateful for the joy and steadiness of this season.

At the same time, I know that many parents have questions about school safety, especially in light of recent events nationally.

Today I am joined by two key leaders at PCA—our Director of Operations, Mr. Steve Howe, who oversees our physical security posture, and our Director of IT and Educational Technology, Mrs. Laurie Underwood, who has built much of the security infrastructure we rely on every day. I think you will find their work both reassuring and encouraging.

May our great God continue to be with you and bless your family at PCA and beyond,

Mike Runey
Head of School

Key Takeaways from this Week’s Podcast

  • Layered Security Approach – PCA relies on multiple levels of protection: Eagle Watch volunteers (background-checked and trained), a discreet response force of staff, and immediate coordination with Dover Police and Fire. This ensures vigilance, visible deterrence, and rapid response.
  • Technology Upgrades – Over 100 cameras now cover campus, inside and out. Every classroom has a phone with E911 capability and intercom access. Upgraded locks and a key-fob system provide secure, flexible entry controls.
  • Partnerships & Training – PCA works closely with Dover Police, Fire, Homeland Security, and even our partner school, Garrison Elementary, to keep plans sharp. Staff undergo ongoing safety drills and training, with age-appropriate readiness for children.
  • Commitment & Continuity – While we all miss seeing Gene Watson in his familiar role, Steve, Laurie, and others have been working alongside him in detail and depth for over a year. This transition was carefully planned, and the school’s security posture remains steady and strong.
