5 Takeaways from the State of the School Address
Each year, our Head of School takes time to reflect on where Portsmouth Christian Academy (PCA) stands and where we are headed. This year’s State of the School Address highlighted exciting progress, challenges we’re tackling, and a vision for the future. Whether you were able to attend or not, here are five key takeaways from the address that all PCA families should know.
1. Campus Growth & Enhancements
One of the most exciting updates is the expansion of PCA’s campus to 70 acres. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the support of our community, PCA has acquired the final portion of the 23-acre land expansion, securing more space for future development and student activities. Additionally, the much-anticipated Eagles Nest playground for kindergarten through fifth grade will be built this summer. The preschool playground, which faced delays last year, is set to be completed this spring. These enhancements reflect our commitment to providing a safe and enriching environment for our students to learn and grow.

2. Academic Excellence & Faculty Recognition
PCA continues to uphold a tradition of academic excellence, with students performing well above national averages. Recent assessment results show that PCA students score above the 95th percentile in math and the 90th percentile in reading compared to peers across the nation. Our dedicated faculty plays a significant role in this success, and their excellence has not gone unnoticed. Several teachers have received state and national recognition, including Jesse Graustein (Science), Matthew Dunphy (Literature & Bible), Ruth Brown (Kindergarten), and Upper School Principal, Jordan Heckelman. These accolades reflect the talent and dedication of PCA’s educators.

3. Focus on Reading & Technology Balance
While PCA students continue to excel in math, the school has noticed a slight dip in reading scores. In response, PCA is taking proactive steps to rebalance instructional priorities to ensure reading remains a core strength. Additionally, the school is working to strike the right balance between technology and traditional learning. PCA recognizes the importance of both digital literacy and foundational skills like handwriting, reading physical books, and public speaking. Efforts are underway to refine how technology is integrated into the classroom while maintaining strong emphasis on critical thinking and deep learning.
4. Navigating Challenges & Opportunities
PCA is facing both headwinds and tailwinds that shape our path forward. Some of the challenges, or headwinds, include a declining societal trust in institutions, evolving views on the value of college, and the growing difficulty of maintaining work-life balance for families. Additionally, ensuring students remain engaged in reading amid the distractions of digital media remains a priority.
At the same time, there are significant tailwinds pushing PCA forward. Student performance continues to outpace national trends, faith is experiencing a revival among students, and there is increasing momentum for parental choice in education, which supports PCA’s mission. By recognizing these factors, PCA is committed to adapting and thriving while continuing to provide a Christ-centered, academically rigorous environment for all students.. PCA is seeing a strong desire among students to grow spiritually, engage in meaningful discussions, and develop a deeper understanding of their beliefs. This faith-driven community remains one of PCA’s greatest strengths, shaping students not just academically but in character and purpose. As students navigate challenges, PCA continues to provide a Christ-centered environment where they can confidently develop their faith and values.

5. Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, PCA is committed to investing in the next 1,000 graduates. The school’s long-term strategy focuses on three key priorities: supporting students, strengthening faculty, and enhancing facilities. This includes sustaining the variable tuition program, ensuring fair compensation for teachers, and making strategic campus improvements to benefit students for years to come. As PCA looks toward the future, the goal remains clear—to equip students to maximize their God-given potential and make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
Looking Ahead
The State of the School Address reaffirmed that PCA is on solid ground, both in terms of its mission and its future direction. With a growing campus, exceptional academics, strong faculty, and a faith-filled community, PCA continues to thrive. As we prepare for the years ahead, we invite our families to stay engaged, support these initiatives, and celebrate the incredible work happening at PCA.
