Second Semester at PCA

The second semester at PCA is going to be a busy time of learning and exploring! Check out each grade level’s plans for the second semester and explore how your child can thrive at PCA.

Preschool (3- and 4- year-olds)

In preschool next semester, children will…

  • Study how God cares for animals in the winter
  • Create their own bird feeders
  • Learn about the Rain Forest
  • Encounter exotic animals through a special on-campus visit from a wildlife expert
  • Act in a skit about protecting our world
  • Become scientists who explore/build kazoos, recycled paper, ”rising raisins,” a volcano, “zipper-bag ice cream,” floating eggs, magnets, and static electricity
  • Deep dive into another country…games, music, school, weather and foods
  • Build friendship skills through parallel and cooperative play, exploring dramatic play, teamwork, and solitary play
  • Observe and learn about Spring, including new life and the Resurrection
  • Honor moms at our Mother’s Day Picnic and Tea Parties
  • Explore nursery rhymes and oceans…including turning our environment into an underwater world!

Primary (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade)

In the second semester at PCA, children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade will have the opportunity to…

  • Study the creation of the world, the life of Jesus, wisdom from Proverbs, the Christmas story, Saul/Paul, Judges, David and Goliath, prophets and missionaries
  • Explore community; traditions; ancestry; holidays; symbols, landmarks, and documents of our country; native Americans; heroism; economy; migration; immigration and geography
  • Discover lifecycles; signs of seasons; plants and insects; marine life; magnetic force; animal habitats and lifecycles; scientific investigation; position and motion; boats and buoyancy; solids, liquids, gases; bones and muscles
  • Release butterflies after metamorphosis
  • Review letter sounds, special sounding rules, early reading (Kindergarten); suffixes, prefixes, plurals; punctuation; homonyms; components of a story; figurative language; cause and effect; and spelling
  • Practice letter formation (Kindergarten); personal narratives; fiction stories; persuasive, procedural, and non-fiction writing; poetry; the Independent Investigative Method; parts of grammar
  • Learn number position; classification; addition and subtraction; beginning geometry and fractions; money values; metric measurement; positional words; estimation; positive and negative prime numbers; time; capacity; multiplication and division
  • Engage in hands-on studies at the waterfront and in our Creative Design Center
  • Move into their second semester foreign language exploration of either Mandarin or Spanish
  • Participate in our annual Spring Concert, Art Show, and Spring Fling
  • Have fun on field trips to Portsmouth Music Hall, the beach, and tidepooling

Elementary (3rd - 5th Grade)

3rd-5th graders will have a great second semester! Children will…

  • Lead a wax museum biography presentation
  • Design and build their own solar ovens, water filtration systems and colonial brochures
  • Dissect squid and owl pellets
  • Discover motion and stability, forces and interactions, endangered animals, energy, waves, weathering and erosion, circulatory system, simple machines, and space
  • Learn about immigration, economics, New Hampshire history, branches of government, first Americans, the Age of Exploration, Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and Reconstruction
  • Study the life of Christ, missions of Paul, man’s purpose, attributes of Jesus, the Church, Israel’s kings, and Isaiah
  • Write friendly and business letters, personal narratives, persuasive speeches, informational research, fairytales, and poetry while studying proper grammar usage
  • Explore orders of operations, measurement and data, geometry, fractions, money, conversions, graphing
  • Engage in hands-on studies at the waterfront and in our Creative Design Center
  • Study Mandarin or Spanish
  • Play in the band, orchestra or chorus (4th and 5th grade)
  • Participate in our annual Spring Concert, Art Show, and Spring Fling
  • Have fun learning outside the classroom on field trips to the Concord State Capitol and the Macauliffe Center

Junior High (6th - 8th Grade)

PCA Junior Highers will have countless opportunities to grow in the second semester. Children will…

  • Participate in Socratic Seminars
  • Learn about the concepts of innovation, civilizations, power, legacy, identity, choices, freedom, and allegory
  • Study Genesis, Acts and John in Bible, and participate in Small Groups
  • Evaluate expressions, orders of operation, inequalities, scientific notation, polygons, linear equations, data analysis and probability
  • Read Tuck Everlasting, fables and fairy tales, Lord of the Rings, The Bronze Bow, Charlotte Doyle, Crispin, Tom Sawyer, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Animal Farm and The Hiding Place
  • Study systems and models, energy and matter, weather and climate, scale and proportion, stability and change, structure and function, and motion and physics
  • Build a volcano and a rubber-band car, and remove the copper from a penny and apply it to a nail
  • Engage in hands-on studies at the waterfront and in our Creative Design Center
  • Go on a missions trip to Costa Rica and a field trip to Washington D.C.
  • Join Band, Orchestra, Chorus or Music and Technology, and participate in the Spring Concert
  • Perform in Theatre’s spring production of Guys and Dolls
  • Play on a Spring athletic team: track, cross country, tennis, softball, or baseball
  • Participate in Student Council, Yearbook, Jazz Band, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the annual Art Show
  • Have fun learning outside the classroom on field trips to Washington D.C. (8th Grade) and around New England

Upper School (9th -12th Grade)

Our Upper School students will get to do the following during the second semester:

  • Design and build a gaming application in Software Engineering
  • Create charcoal landscapes and learn techniques from “painting masters” in Drawing and Painting
  • Design and write their own books of poetry in English
  • Research and present projects at the school’s annual Science Fair
  • Perform in Theatre’s spring production of Guys and Dolls
  • Play on a Spring athletic team: track, cross country, tennis, softball, or baseball
  • Participate in the annual Food Festival, Jazz and Classical All-States, Prom, Luau Lunch, Spiritual Emphasis Days, Missions Trip, College Planning, and Art Show
